Player of the Match

12.45am Thank you everyone for your time this evening. In under 10 hours, we'll have England taking on South Africa. Till then, good bye!

"Wicket looked good, little slow, but we should've scored 170, I felt," says losing captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. "Again this kind of team you have to take some gambling, like we put Rishad up at No. 4. We tried something different. (Personal run) Enjoying taking responsibility and I love to do that. So far doing alright. Hopefully I can contribute more. (India next...) I think very important today that the top order got some runs. We struggled last couple of matches. The bowling unit did good job last 2-3 games so hopefully bowlers will continue their form."

Now time for winning captain Mitchell Marsh: (first half) really exciting bowling performance. Boys played well tonight. (Best playing XI, this?) It is a very good playing XI. We've got 15 guys that can take us deep in the World Cup. We'll pick teams based on conditions. Long way to go. (His own role) Loving it. Great team. Lots of leaders within the group. Amazing staff keeps us prepared."

Hat-trick Patrick is the Player of the Match. "(Hridoy's wicket) Set batter in, laying the innings, you never know how the innings would've gone. I think we took wickets through the innings. (No hat-trick before) I had a few in juniors but never for Australia. Agar and Ellis on the bench have T20 hat-tricks so good to join that club. Pretty awesome to tick that off. Boys are welcoming me in the club. Good club to be part of. (Tonight's performance) Fairly polished. Goal was to win the game and we did that really well. Run rate also a big positive."

Vishwa A: "Bangladesh has one more tough opponent tomorrow (India). Good luck to them! India has the momentum. They will like to book their place in semis."

12.30am It's official. Australia win by 28 runs (by DLS method)

The rain only delayed what was inevitable. A comfortable Australia victory courtesy David Warner's unbeaten 35-ball 53 and Travis Head's 21-ball 31. Their 65-run first-wicket stand set up the chase in such a way that even though there were two quick wickets thereafter, it didn't dent the chase.

Credit also to Adam Zampa (2 for 24) and Pat Cummins (3 for 29) for restricting Bangladesh to only 140. Towhid Hridoy (42) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) needed more support from other batters but didn't get much. Don't forget the slice of history too, when Cummins picked up a hat-trick in the first innings.

12.25am The covers are firmly in place. For those asking how NRR will be calculated in case of a rain-hit game, it will be based on what Bangladesh's par score would've been at 11.2 overs, which is 72 in this case compared to Australia's 100.

12.22am Melinda Farrell can spot some ground staff members trudging out. The rain has also almost stopped.

12.12am We have begun to start losing overs. The cut-off time is 12.45am.

12.04am, June 21: We've ticked over to a new day. And if my math is right, we are starting to lose overs now from 12.12am. If we don't start in 30 minutes, we might have a case where the DLS-adjusted target would drop under 100, and Australia will automatically be considered winners. Very heavy rain now.

11.56pm The rain is coming down hard now, probably the strongest we've seen this evening. The players sprint off and DLS par is 72 at this stage, meaning Australia are 28 runs ahead. They scored 30 in the last 14 balls.

Elsewhere, Slovenia had the game in the bag...until Luka Jovic stepped up. The Serbian forward, among the shortest on the pitch, leapt past a nine-man defence to score a 95th minute equalizer that keeps Serbia's hopes of making it to the Euro 2024 knockouts well and truly alive.

1
Taskin Ahmed to Warner, 1 run, length ball on middle and leg, and he pulls with disdain. In the air, and deep square leg can take a catch, but the ball lands just a metre short. Team 100 and play is interrupted by rain again.

6
Taskin Ahmed to Warner, SIX, a 34-ball fifty! Gets there in style with a six. Full ball on his shin, and Warner absolutely hammers a flick over deep square leg. He was so sure it was going for six that he didn't even look at the ball's direction

END OF OVER:
11 | 13 Runs | AUS: 93/2 (48 runs required from 54 balls, RR: 8.45, RRR: 5.33)

Rishad Hossain to Maxwell, no run, expensive over although this one is a dot. Full toss wide outside off and Maxwell is disappointed not being able to clear cover
10.5
2
Rishad Hossain to Maxwell, 2 runs, once again to wide long on but Tanzim at long on runs around and gets a hand to it. This was a tossed-up full toss outside off, and Maxwell once again swatted a shot away to the wide-long on region.
10.4
6
Rishad Hossain to Maxwell, SIX, ridiculous! Flat six over wide long on. Full ball, outside off stump. Maxwell stretches his arms out, and then brings the bat down with such precision that his checked leg-side swat flies over wide long on

zia: "awful from fizz and taskin. two most experienced bowlers and bowling bad length balls smh! "

10.3
1
Rishad Hossain to Warner, 1 run, tossed up, lands just outside leg. Warner lifts his back leg and caresses a flick through the midwicket region to the deep
10.2
4
Rishad Hossain to Warner, FOUR, reverse sweep for four! Full around leg stump, and Warner is quick to get in position. Hammers it over conventional point, and there's nobody in the deep
10.1

Rishad Hossain to Warner, no run, fullish ball on middle. Solid bounce. Warner looks busy, pressing forward but then stepping back, and then nudges the ball towards point

61 needed off 60. What's Bangladesh's plan? Here's Rishad for now

END OF OVER:
10 | 10 Runs | AUS: 80/2 (61 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 8.00, RRR: 6.10)

  • David Warner41 (30b)

  • Rishad Hossain2-0-10-2

No drinks break because of the stoppages. We move

1
Mustafizur Rahman to Warner, 1 run, slower ball, full just outside leg stump. Gently knocked to square leg for a single.
9.5
4
Mustafizur Rahman to Warner, FOUR, short ball on middle, but this time the bounce is more spongy. Warner hangs back and absolutely clatters a pull in front of square for four
9.4
0
Mustafizur Rahman to Warner, no run, short ball on middle. Warner drops his knees and gets his head out of the ball's way. Mustafizur bowled that into the wicket while also rolling his fingers over. Like Cummins these days, although Mustafizur has always had this ball
9.3
0
Mustafizur Rahman to Warner, no run, around the stumps to Warner. Full ball just outside off and the slap from Warner is stopped smartly by point. Warner grimaces, perhaps he thought he should've put it away
9.2
1
Mustafizur Rahman to Maxwell, 1 run, full ball on middle stump, and pushed to long off for a single. Mustafizur takes a tumble on the followthrough while trying to stop the ball
9.1
4
Mustafizur Rahman to Maxwell, FOUR, full ball, wider outside off but not wide enough, and that allows Maxwell to play a punchy drive, through the covers for four

The Fizz.

Rishad Hossain to Maxwell, 1 run, full ball around off. Brings out the reverse sweep, and well timed, but straight to backward point

slip and leg slip both present

W
Rishad Hossain to Marsh, OUT, appeal for lbw and given right away by Illingworth! Full ball on the stumps, but perhaps sliding down leg with Marsh missing the sweep? Marsh reviews. Replays show Marsh is struck on the knee-roll after the ball pitched on middle and slid towards leg. Ball-tracking confirms it is clipping the outer half of leg stump, so Marsh will have to keep walking, albeit on an "umpire's call."

MR Marsh lbw b Rishad Hossain 1 (8m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 16.66

1
Rishad Hossain to Warner, 1 run, full ball on middle. Warner opts to stay on the back foot and pushes a shot through the on-side to long on
8.3
1
Rishad Hossain to Marsh, 1 run, short ball around off. Straightens. Marsh gets down on one knee and sweeps towards backward square leg for a single
