Ashar Zaidi, the Sussex allrounder, has been given a suspended one-match ban by the club following his Twitter reaction after being dismissed in the first innings against Somerset.

Zaidi was adjudged caught at the wicket off Jamie Overton in the first innings and although he showed disbelief towards umpire Nigel Llong the punishment has come after he returned to the dressing room and posted the comment "stinker#wtf".

"I didn't think he showed any dissent," Mark Robinson, the Sussex coach, said at the time. "He was just desperately disappointed as he didn't hit the ball. The umpires are two of the best in the business but you get wrong decisions from time to time. You can't be doing that sort of thing whether or not it was a good or bad decision."

A Sussex statement said Zaidi has apologised for his behaviour and regrets his actions deeply.

Zaidi signed a two-year contract with Sussex ahead of the 2014 having made two appearances in 2013. It followed a concerted effort to find a county which involved him writing to several clubs asking for a trial after playing in the Lancashire League since leaving Pakistan.
