Dale Steyn will undergo a fitness Test on the second morning of the Newlands Test to determine whether he will be able to bowl again. Steyn injured his right hamstring in the middle session on day one and was off the field for the rest of the day.
"Dale is a little bit stiff at the moment and a little bit sore. Hopefully he wakes up tomorrow and he is going to be okay, if he is not then the rest of the group have to front up," bowling coach Allan Donald said after the day's play.
Steyn left the field at 2.20pm after bowling one ball in his 11th over, which Morne Morkel completed. He received treatment at the ground and was not taken for scans. He was spotted seated in the dressing room after tea but did not return to the field at all.
Two days before the match, Steyn said he was feeling as though he had found a good rhythm following his match-winning, reverse-swinging spell in Port Elizabeth. "I feel I get better the more I bowl," he said. He also confirmed then that he had enjoyed some time off after South Africa's win last Sunday. He returned to training on Wednesday, where he only did some light drills to "get the legs loose", while leaving the actual bowling "to the younger guys like Kyle [Abbott]". Steyn said he would get some overs under his belt on Thursday and Friday to ensure he was match ready.
Of South Africa's seamers, Steyn had bowled the most overs across the first two Tests. He sent down 43.2 overs in Centurion and 33 in Port Elizabeth to total 76.2. Contrastingly, Vernon Philander had bowled 65 and Morne Morkel 67.
This is not the first time in the series South Africa have been a bowler short. They were without Wayne Parnell for the second innings in Port Elizabeth. He picked up a groin injury after 8.3 overs in the first innings. Steyn himself had suffered a bout of gastro, for which he had to go off the field, in the first Test. He had also suffered a rib injury in the lead up to the series.
