Hunt like a pack
Australia's bowlers hunted like a pack throughout the series with all four of their bowlers taking more than 20 wickets for the series. Pat Cummins finished as the leading wicket-taker with 23 wickets, while Mitchell Starc finished second with 22; Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood each claimed 21 wickets. No other bowler from Australia took any wickets. Only Starc and Hazlewood picked up five wicket hauls. The last time Australia had just two five-wicket hauls in an Ashes series at home was in 2006-07. Incidentally in that series as well the four bowlers from the home attack took more than 20 wickets each: Stuart Clarke (26), Shane Warne (23), Glenn McGrath (21) and Brett Lee (20).
England go winless again
England failed to win a Test in this Ashes series - this is the 12th such instance, when England have played five or more matches. England have not won a Test in three of the last four Ashes Series held in Australia. England are now winless in their last 11 Tests away from home, losing nine and managing a draw on the other two occasions. For England, Alastair Cook has now been part of 15 losses in Australia - the most for any cricketer while visiting another country.
Smith all the way
Steven Smith was possibly the main reason for Australia's success. He scored 687 runs at an average of 137.40. The second highest run-getter on either side - Shaun Marsh (445) - was 242 runs short of Smith. His tally was the sixth-highest for Australia in an Ashes series, with Don Bradman occupying three of those top six positions. Smith was also Player of the Series, with two Man of the Match awards to his name. Smith now has eight such awards - the most for a cricketer since 2014. Herath is second with six.
Moeen Ali's poor series
Moeen Ali finished his series in familiar fashion, dismissed by Nathan Lyon once again. Moeen's disastrous series came to end when he fell to Lyon for the seventh time in nine innings. This is the most a batsman has been dismissed by a bowler in a series since 2001. Moeen scored 90 runs from 218 balls at an average of 12.85 against Lyon. The previous instance of a bowler dismissing a batsmen on seven occasions in a series was McGrath against Michael Atherton in the 1997 Ashes series in England. In the 2017-18 Ashes, Moeen scored just 179 runs at an average of 19.88 and took five wickets at 115.00.
