  • Melbourne became the first venue to host day-night matches on two different grounds. Colonial Stadium also became 35th ground to host a day-night ODI.

  • Michael Bevan scored his fifth hundred in his 142nd match-his second against South Africa in his 26th match.

  • Steve Waugh scored his third hundred in his 296th match-his second against South Africa in his 41st match.

  • Bevan, on 66, completed his 1000 runs against South Africa in his 26th match and 24th innings. He became the second Australian after Steve Waugh and the fourth batsman overall to do so.

  • Bevan and Steve Waugh provided the 33rd instance of two batsmen scoring a hundred each in the same innings. It was the third such instance for Australia. Geoff Marsh (104) and David Boon (111) had scored hundreds agaist India at Jaipur on 07-09-1986. Twelve years later Adam Gilchrist (103) and Ricky Ponting (124) emulated them against Pakistan at Lahore on 10-11-1998.

  • The 222 run-partnership for the fourth wicket between Bevan and Steve Waugh is Australia's best for this wicket against all countries. Interestingly the previous record stand for the fourth wicket was of 189 runs between the same pair at Centurion on 10-04-1997.

  • Bevan and Steve Waugh also moved to within two runs of eclipsing the all-time highest partnership for Australia in one-day internationals - namely, the 224 added by Dean Jones and Allan Border against Sri Lanka at Adelaide on 28-01-1985.

  • Steve Waugh's innings (114

  • ) is the highest for Australia against South Africa in Australia. He obliterated his twin brother Mark Waugh's 107 made at Sydney on 23-01-1994.

  • Australia's total (295 for five) is its highest against South Africa in all matches. This eclipses the previous highest of 287 for five (in 49 overs) at Centurion on 10-04-1997.

  • The wicket of Bevan was the 28th for Shaun Pollock against Australia in his 20th match. This takes him past Fanie de Villiers' tally of wickets against Australia. Now only Allan Donald with 43 wickets from 28 matches is ahead of Pollock.

  • Jacques Kallis with figures of 10-0-74-1 now holds the record of conceding most runs in a match for South Africa against Australia. The previous record was in the name of Allan Donald who conceded 67 runs in his 10 overs at Johannesburg on 08-04-1997.

  • Gary Kirsten, on 31, completed his 1000 runs against Australia in his 30th match and innings. He became the third South African after Hansie Cronje (1364 runs in 39 matches) and Jonty Rhodes (1153 runs in 43 matches) and the 15th batsman overall to do so.

  • Jonty Rhodes, on 13, completed his 4000 runs in ODIs in his 178th match and 162nd innings. He became the third South African after Hansie Cronje and Gary Kirsten and 39th batsman overall to do so.

  • The defeat by 94 runs is the second largest for South Africa in a day-night encounter. South Africa's biggest defeat, however, still remains by 103 runs also against Australia at Sydney on 14-12-1993.

  • Steve Waugh won Man of the Match award for the 20th time in his career.
