R Ashwin stars in narrow win against Bangladesh

R Ashwin, with figures of two for 20, helped India edge past Bangladesh with a narrow one-run win, to keep their World T20 campaign alive, in Bangalore on Wednesday.

Bangladesh was playing against India, in India, for the first time in 18 years, and the tourists required just 11 runs from six balls to register their first win of the campaign. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah had reduced that margin to just two with three balls to spare.

Hardik Pandya accounted for Rahim off the fourth ball, before Mahmudullah slogged a full toss to deep midwicket and then Shuvagata Hom was then run out by MS Dhoni, from the last ball of the match, to complete the win.

India's batsmen had posted just 146 runs in their innings after Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and pressed them in to bat first. Dhoni turned to his spin-mainstay Ashwin in the third over to provide him with a much-needed wicket, and he struck with just the second ball by dismissing opener Mohammad Mithun.

Jaspreet Bumrah then dropped Tamim Iqbal in Ashwin's next over. Iqbal made Bumrah pay and clubbed him for four boundaries an over later. Dhoni turned to spin, once again, and this time Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina responded by dismissing Iqbal for 35 and Sabbir Rahman for 26.

Shakib Al Hasan smashed two sixes to reduce the margin to a comfortable 52 from 48 balls. Ashwin, in his last over, then had Al Hasan caught at slip. He conceded just one run in the over and ended with figures of two just 20 runs.

"We've never really got together and worried so much. I don't have anything left. I'm drained after today's game. I'll just crash now," a visibly drained, Ashwin said when claiming his Man-of-the-Match award.

"He (Bumrah) had put down a catch, he was 2 overs for 22, he was down, but Bumrah came back for us. I probably gave him a cheeky idea to try a mankad in the end. We might have taken flak, but why not. We have not probably batted well. Today, we are not real contenders for the tournament, but if it improves we will be. I felt when Tamim's sweep in the air I thought we were in control, but when he put it down, later on I put one down. I had so much of emotions going through. But for the team to go all the way is what's important."
