Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes, BBL 2020-21, Fantasy Pick, team predictions

Jan 18: Sydney Thunder vs Hobart Hurricanes, Canberra

Pro Tip: Dawid Malan's consistency in T20 cricket has been stellar recently. While he has not recorded a big score in the last three games, expect him to come good on Monday.

Our XI: Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Sam Billings, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, Ben McDermott, D'Arcy Short, Dawid Malan, Tim David, Sandeep Lamichhane, Riley Meredith.

Substitutes: Peter Handscomb, Scott Boland, Callum Ferguson, Ben Cutting.

Player Availability: Colin Ingram will not be available for the Hurricanes for the rest of the season. Thunder's Green did not play the last game after suffering an injury and his availability is in doubt for this game too.

We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.

Captain: Alex Hales

Hales is the second-highest run-scorer in BBL10 with 323 runs in ten games at a phenomenal strike-rate of 161.50, behind only Josh Philippe. He has been an aggressor in the first six overs, scoring 242 runs at a rate of 170.42, the most in this year's tournament. In the six games he played at Manuka Oval this season, he recorded four 30-plus scores.

Vice-captain: Ben McDermott

Despite playing just eight games so far, McDermott is the third highest run-scorer with 301 runs at an average of 43. He also gets extra points for his wicketkeeping - he has effected six dismissals in eight games. The last time he played against the Thunder at Manuka Oval, he scored an unbeaten 44 in 36 delivers.

Hot Picks

Dawid Malan: Malan, the No. 1-ranked T20I batsman, has scored 175 runs in six games in BBL10. He has been a bit off in the recent games having not scored 30-plus runs in the last three innings and he is due for a big one. In 2020, he scored 397 runs in 10 T20Is at an average of 49.62 and a strike-rate of 142.29. He is a good vice-captain choice too.

Daniel Sams: Since BBL09, no player has taken more wickets than Daniel Sams with 40 wickets in 25 games striking once in every 12.3 deliveries. He has shown glimpses of his batting potential in the past seasons but in BBL10 he has taken it to new levels with his 25-ball unbeaten 65 and 37-ball unbeaten 50.

D'Arcy Short: For the first time in four seasons, Short has not been at the top of the run-scoring charts for the Hurricanes in the BBL. He has scored only 195 runs in ten games but has made up a bit by picking up a couple of three-wicket hauls so far. He looked in good nick in the last game where he recorded a 50-plus score against Scorchers.

Differential Picks

Sam Billings: One of the much-improved players in the recent years, Sam Billings already showed his batting prowess with a 48-ball 83 against Scorchers recently. In the recent ODI series against Australia, he recorded the highest score in the series with his 110-ball 118.

Sandeep Lamichhane: In a pitch that assists spinners to a great extent, Lamichhane is expected to make an impact. The 20-year-old spinner has been a prolific wicket taker in the BBL having picked up 30 wickets in 25 games so far.

Alternate Scenarios

  • Ben Cutting can replace Tim David.

  • Callum Ferguson and Usman Khawaja can be swapped.
