This weekend should have been the denouement of the third Test between India and England in the newly inaugurated colossal Motera stadium, but it wrapped up in under two days on a dusty pitch that saw England's batting collapse twice. More runs were scored, in fact, in the second T20I between New Zealand and Australia in Dunedin, that the hosts won by four runs. Axar Patel 11-for sees India surge to 2-1 series lead in two-day Test
It was a two-day Test the likes of which hadn't been seen since 1935, as England slumped to their lowest score in India on the way to a ten-wicket defeat on a challenging pitch. Axar Patel starred with the ball once more, taking five-fors in both innings, the secret of which Karthik Krishnaswamy has decoded - go straight and undercut. This Test loss also means that England are now out of the WTC final; India will make it, but only if they avoid losing in the next Test. George Dobell says England's meltdown in the pink-ball Test shows that the longest format is not their priority currently, and that they may have squandered the win for want of a plan, and a solid defence, against spin. The Motera pitch has copped a fair bit of criticism as well, coming as it did in the wake of much fanfare as the newly refurbished and renamed stadium was inaugurated - Varun Shetty has the story of how cricket's largest stadium came about - but Krishnaswamy says the pitch could have been a backhanded compliment to England.

Martin Guptill returned to form with 97, surpassing Rohit Sharma for most sixes in T20Is, while Jimmy Neesham had a key impact with bat and ball.

New Zealand women haven't had the same luck as the men's team though, as they fell to their second straight defeat against England women in the ODI series. Brooke Halliday again impressed but New Zealand were well short after an early batting collapse.
