Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the first half, but Aletico defender Diego Godin, who scored the equaliser in the 49th minute, said los Rojiblancos knew the goal would come.

"We fought all season long, hanging on against difficult teams and against Real Madrid and Barcelona," Godin said.

"We felt the pressure, a lot of things were going against us. But the coach told us just to be confident and believe in ourselves and the goal would come.''

Atletico's last trophy came in 1996, but this one continues a strong run of form that saw the club win the Europa League in 2010 and 2012, as well as both ensuing UEFA Super Cups.

"We've made Atleti history," Francisco Juanfran told reporters after the game. "We feel for this shirt like the fans do. We always remember them. This is for them."

And Atletico have their sights set on a bigger goal, with next weekend's Champions League final against Real Madrid still to come.

"This match has been a reflection of our season," David Villa said. "The lads showed tremendous character and poise to see it through."
