Hull's Lazar Markovic: I should have played more at Liverpool

On-loan Hull City winger Lazar Markovic believes he should have been given more of a chance at Liverpool.

Markovic has played just 34 times for the Reds since his £20 million move from Benfica in August 2014, finding himself out of favour under Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp.

During his time at the Merseyside club, the Serbia international has spent time out on loan at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and now Hull.

It appears unlikely he has any long-term future at Anfield, with Liverpool only willing to cut short his unsuccessful loan stay at Sporting if he agreed to move to Hull in January.

"Liverpool spent money on me and I believe they should have believed more in my ability," he said. "Both Liverpool and the manager. I believed I should have played more than I did.

"I got the chance to play more elsewhere. I have no problems with that.

"We don't know what will happen yet, it depends on the Liverpool situation. I still have two years on my contract at Liverpool. We shall see.

"I enjoy playing in the Premier League and would like to stay in the Premier League."

Since moving to the KCOM Stadium, the 23-year-old has scored two goals in 13 appearances for Marco Silva's side in all competitions as they look to maintain their Premier League status.

"I came to England to play football and I think I have proved myself. And proved to those who thought otherwise," he added.

"I enjoy playing for this manager. There are only positives about him. The manager is very positive and has a lot of respect from the players. He gets 100 percent from all of us. This is my best form so far."

Meanwhile, Silva is demanding more from the Serbia international now he is playing regularly and has the backing of a manager.

Silva also admitted that any discussions about making Markovic's stay at Hull a permanent one will occur at the end of the season.

"He's a big talent. I know people might feel happy with his performances but I want more," the former Olympiakos boss added.

"He has improved his performances in the last games now he knows our ideas but I know and he knows as well it's possible he can improve his performances.

"When we talked the first time to try and convince Lazar to come here, I told him he needs to play and he needs a coach to believe in him. We needed a player like him and we've given him time to win his confidence.

"When you look at the last year and a half before he came here, he didn't play. At Fenerbahce he didn't play too much and then for six months at Sporting he didn't play as well. Since he came here he's needed 90 minutes in his legs and to gain confidence. At this moment he's in a better condition and he's playing better."

On Markovic's future, Silva continued: "Those are the things we need to talk about at the end of the season.

"Of course, he's not our player. He's a Liverpool player. Every moment he stays here with us, we'll work with him to help him like he helps us."
