Liverpool to rival Manchester City for Monaco's Benjamin Mendy - sources

Liverpool are ready to rival Manchester City for Benjamin Mendy, although Pep Guardiola's side remain favourites to land the Monaco defender, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.

France international Mendy, 22, is a target for a number of clubs across Europe after impressing for Monaco following his move from Marseille last summer.

City, who have allowed Gael Clichy to leave on a free transfer, have been leading the chase for Mendy as they look to bring in a new left-back but now face rival interest from Liverpool.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made a new left-back one of his top priorities this summer, with James Milner having switched from his normal midfield role to play as a makeshift full-back throughout the season.

Having finished in the Champions League places in the Premier League this season, Liverpool have a bigger budget to help them compete with their rivals in the transfer market and they are now ready to battle for Mendy, but sources have told ESPN FC that City remain in pole position to land the attacking full-back.

It had been reported this week that a City deal was imminent, but Mendy played down those suggestions on social media.
