Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suffered bruise against Real Madrid

Schalke have announced that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suffered only a bruise after he was taken to hospital for tests as the result of an injury during the Champions League clash at home to Real Madrid.

Huntelaar, who had returned to the side after missing three games through a domestic suspension, had to be substituted after 33 minutes with Schalke trailing Madrid 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke announced on their official Twitter feed: "Lower-leg injury for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. A more exact diagnosis to follow after further examination in hospital."

Huntelaar, who had been suffering with a virus in the buildup to the game, was reported to have suffered a fractured fibula but Schalke later announced that the Netherlands international had only suffered a bruise.

Roberto Di Matteo, whose Schalke side went on to lose the first leg of the last-16 tie 2-0 after a late Marcelo goal, said of Huntelaar's injury: "Nothing's broken [but it is] very painful. We can't say how long he'll be ruled out."
