Inter Milan can challenge at the top of the Serie A table following the arrival of Stevan Jovetic, Fredy Guarin has said.

Jovetic underwent a medical in Milan on Tuesday and told Inter fans afterwards that he would see them at the San Siro, with his move from Manchester City set to be officially confirmed.

He is expected to sign a three-year contract on Wednesday, joining initially on a one-year loan deal that will be made permanent next summer.

Guarin told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Knowing [Inter coach Roberto] Mancini, I knew that we were going to strengthen well this summer.

"We've got to say thanks to [club president Erick] Thohir for the effort he's put in.

"Let's just say that we've got to get back into the Champions League now."

He praised the qualities of Jovetic, whose spell at City was interrupted by injuries, describing him as "unstoppable in a one-on-one."

And he added: "Now just let us win two or three games in a row. We'll be convinced that we are good enough to finish in the leading positions."

Although Inter have lost three preseason games in a row without scoring a goal, Mancini said he was optimistic about the campaign ahead.

"We've looked good, apart from the results," he explained after defeats to Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Real Madrid. "From the game with Bayern to the game against Real, we improved a great deal.

"I'm happy that Jovetic is arriving, because up front we don't have many players. He's definitely going to be very useful."
