Manchester United have contacted Torino to register their interest in striker Andrea Belotti, sources have told ESPN FC.
United manager Jose Mourinho is determined to add two forwards to his squad this summer, with Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann the priority target.
And Mourinho is also considering a move for Belotti, 23, who has scored 27 goals in 34 appearances for Torino this season, with 25 of those coming in 31 Serie A games.
Sources have told ESPN FC that senior figures at United have discussed the Italy international with their Torino counterparts, who secured the player to a new contract -- tying him to the club until 2021 -- as recently as December.
Torino president Urbano Cairo revealed at the time that Belotti had negotiated a €100 million release clause in the contract, applicable only if the player moves to a club outside Italy.
United will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic until January 2018 at the earliest -- if the 35-year-old extends his contract this summer -- following his recent cruciate ligament injury and it is reported that the club's all-time leading goal scorer Wayne Rooney will be allowed to leave at the end of the season, with the Chinese Super League appearing the most likely destination.
With Mourinho facing up to the loss of two experienced forwards, he has made it clear to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that the squad needs top quality attacking reinforcements to compete with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
A move for Griezmann would be simplified if United can secure qualification for next season's Champions League, but regardless of the club's pursuit of the Atletico man, additional attackers will be signed.
United are also interested in Everton's Romelu Lukaku and Monaco's Kylian Mbappe, but Belotti, a powerful and imposing striker, is a player who fits Mourinho's traditional profile of a centre-forward.
There is a view that United are planning for the summer with two separate target lists, centred on whether the club returns to the Champions League or if they face another campaign in the Europa League.
Mourinho, who wants to strengthen all departments of his squad, is also interested in Burnley defender Michael Keane, Chelsea midfielder Willian, Monaco's Tiemoue Bakayoko and Eric Dier of Tottenham.
And with uncertainty surrounding the future of David De Gea due to renewed interest from Real Madrid, Mourinho may also be forced to recruit a new goalkeeper this summer.
However, sources have told ESPN FC that De Gea is not pushing to leave United at the end of the season despite being linked with a transfer to Madrid.
