Nigeria's Super Eagles may be poised for a return to Kaduna for their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, two years after overcrowding led to a fine from CAF, the continent's ruling body.

In March 2016, the stadium was the scene of potentially fatal overcrowding when an estimated 40 000 fans packed into the 16 000-capacity venue to see the Super Eagles take on Egypt in a 2017 Afcon qualifier.

Mohammed Salah's injury time strike cancelled out Oghenekaro Etebo's goal on the hour and saw the game finish 1-1. Four days later, in the second leg, Ramadan Sobhi's goal ended Nigeria's hopes of reaching Africa's flagship tournament.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr arrived in the country on Tuesday, and on Wednesday was in Kaduna to inspect facilities at the newly-renovated Ahmadu Bello Stadium, accompanied by NFF second vice president Shah Dikko and Super Eagles team administrator Day Enebi.

Rohr will also inspect other stadia ahead of October's home game against Libya. The venues under consideration are the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba and the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

"I will look on others, too," Rohr told KweseESPN.

The Super Eagles travel to Seychelles on September 7 for Matchday 2 of the ongoing qualification series, needing a win to keep pace with group leaders Libya and South Africa after suffering a 2-0 opening day loss at home to Bafana Bafana in June 2017.

Rohr is expected to name his squad for the game on Friday.

The finals of the 32nd Africa Cup of Nations finals are scheduled to be staged in Cameroon next June.
