Mexico beats Canada to guarantee spot in CONCACAF Hex tournament

Mexico qualified for the Hexagonal stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying at a stroll on Tuesday, defeating Canada 2-0 in the Estadio Azteca to make it four wins from four on the road to Russia 2018.

Andres Guardado opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute, with Jesus "Tecatito" Corona sealing the victory in first-half injury time.

El Tri has yet to concede a goal in World Cup qualifying and coach Juan Carlos Osorio's record is five wins from his first five games in charge of the national team.

Mexico dominated possession against a Canada side that resisted bravely, but offered little going forward and has now only scored once in 360 minutes of qualifying.

Marco Fabian was brought down inside the penalty area by Doneil Henry and captain Guardado stroked the resulting spot kick into the left corner of the goal to hand Mexico the lead.

The highlight of the game came from Porto's Corona, who produced a magical bit of skill on the edge of the box and slid a finish low into the corner of the net for the second.

The second half dipped in intensity. Mexico seemed comfortable and Canada concerned about goal difference in a tight Group A, with Honduras and El Salvador also in the running for second place.

Osorio had made five changes from Friday's 3-0 victory against the same opposition in Vancouver, including dropping goal-scorers Hirving Lozano and Javier Hernandez to the bench.
