Valspar Championship experts' picks

A few of our experts believe in Jim Furyk this week. Will he deliver at the Valspar Championship? Harry How/Getty Images

In a fresh twist for the 2014-15 season, our golf experts will pick one player they think will win that week's PGA Tour event. They will "earn" whatever cash their selection makes that week. Finish first and it's likely a $1 million-plus payout. Miss the cut and it's a bagel in the bank.

The catch? They can pick any particular golfer only once all season. We'll keep a tally every week -- for bragging rights, of course.

This week, the tour stops at the Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida, for the Valspar Championship.

Matt Barrie, "SportsCenter" anchor: The time is now for Jim Furyk. His accuracy off the tee and his energy set up perfectly for the Valspar. Furyk hasn't finished worse than 14th in his three starts this calendar year and has finished in the top 20 in his past five outings at Innisbrook. Coming off my win with Dustin Johnson, I'm hitting fairways and greens. Give me Furyk.

Jonathan Coachman, "SportsCenter" anchor: I am going with Justin Thomas. He has been off for a couple of weeks, but I think the tour rookie is ready to break through. He played great on the West Coast, but lives in Florida. He is comfortable here. And I think he wants to impress his good friend Jordan Spieth, who is also in the field this week.

Michael Collins, ESPN.com senior golf analyst: Well, it's not time to throw the Hail Mary yet, but if Harig keeps his run going we all may need to send him to Vegas with all of our money. This week sets up perfectly for Kevin Na. It's not a long hitter's course, but rewards accuracy. Bombers typically don't win here because wildly missing tee shots gets you into serious trouble. Even though Na's accuracy is listed at 58 percent, when he misses fairways it's not by much, so he's rarely in serious trouble off the tee. Coming from a top-10 finish last week, expect a top 5 this week from Na.

Bob Harig, ESPN.com senior golf writer: Taking a bit of a gamble here on Luke Donald, whose form has not been great at the start of 2015. But this would appear to be a good time to choose the former No. 1 golfer, who won the tournament at Innisbrook's Copperhead course in 2012 and has finished no worse than a tie for sixth in his past four appearances.

Copperhead is more of a strategic course than one that requires length, hence the success in recent years of players such as last year's winner, John Senden, as well as Furyk. And Donald thrives on those types of layouts. The Englishman tied for seventh just two weeks ago at the Honda Classic and was 49th last week at Doral. This week, however, he is back at a place that better suits him.

Kevin Maguire, ESPN.com senior golf editor: A well-rested Jim Furyk heads to Tampa this week showing nothing worse than a T-14 in three starts so far in 2015. A past champion on the Copperhead course, Furyk's average finish there in his past five starts is 8.5. The venue calls for accuracy off the tee, and the 16-time PGA Tour winner is currently 10th in that category this season. Hopefully he's not holding the 54-hole lead, since he's now 0-for-9 converting those into victories after failing to do so earlier this year at Pebble Beach.

John Ziomek, "SportsCenter" coordinating producer: St. Patrick's Day is Tuesday so I'm hoping the luck of the Irish will shine down on Padraig Harrington in back-to-back starts. His confidence should be through the roof coming off the win at the Honda, combined with the fact he once shot 61 at Innisbrook in the first round in 2012.
