Jim Furyk (wrist) withdraws from second straight tournament

ATLANTA -- For the second consecutive week, Jim Furyk has withdrawn from a FedEx Cup playoff event -- and his participation in the upcoming Presidents Cup could be in jeopardy.

It was announced Tuesday that Furyk will skip this week's Tour Championship to continue rehabilitating a lingering bone contusion on his left wrist.

"While I am disappointed to miss this week's event in Atlanta, I am now placing all my efforts on being healthy and ready to play in the Presidents Cup," said Furyk, who also withdrew from last week's BMW Championship. "[Captain] Jay Haas will be made aware of my progress in the coming days, as we see how the injury responds to the treatment."

The Presidents Cup will take place Oct. 8-11 in Incheon City, South Korea. Furyk, currently ranked seventh in the world, was one of 10 players to automatically qualify for the United States team.

If he is unable to compete, Haas will have until Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. local time to choose an eligible replacement.

For this week's tournament, Furyk will receive last-place, unofficial prize money in the sum of $132,000. He will also collect a FedEx Cup bonus based on his final standing on the points list.

For the second straight year, the Tour Championship field will include just 29 players. Hideki Matsuyama, previously paired with Furyk, will play his opening round as a single.
