Catcher Chris Stewart agrees to one-year, $575K deal with Braves

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Catcher Chris Stewart has agreed to $575,000, one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves.

The 35-year-old hit .183 in 51 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season. He is a seven-year major league veteran.

Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos announced the roster addition after the Braves' first spring training workout for pitchers and catchers.

"This is a depth move, an insurance move," general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Wednesday before the first spring training workout

Stewart will back up catchers Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki.

"He's on a big league, non-guaranteed deal," Anthopoulos said. "We'll see how he looks in camp. If something happens in the next six weeks, it gives us another option."
