Tigers, shortstop Jordy Mercer agree to 1-year deal

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $5.25 million contract with shortstop Jordy Mercer, according to multiple reports.

Mercer will replace Jose Iglesias as the Tigers' starting shortstop. Iglesias is a free agent and is seeking more money than the Tigers were willing to pay. He made $6.275 million last season.

Mercer, 32, has played his entire seven-season major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and hit .251 with six home runs and 39 RBIs in 117 games last season. He has a career batting average of .256 and has 55 home runs and 277 RBIs.

Iglesias, 28, hit .269 with five home runs and 48 RBIs in 125 games.
