Rick Renteria interviews with Tigers

DETROIT -- San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria has interviewed for the Detroit Tigers' manager's job.

Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed Thursday that Renteria has interviewed. The Tigers need a new manager after Jim Leyland stepped down following the team's loss to Boston in the AL Championship Series.

Renteria isn't the only candidate with ties to the Padres to interview recently. Detroit also interviewed former major league catcher Brad Ausmus, who works in San Diego's front office as a special assistant to the GM.

Renteria has managed in the minor leagues in the San Diego and Miami organizations.

Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon have also interviewed for the Detroit job.
