Former Diamond Megan Anderson will take over as Queensland Firebirds coach for the 2021 Super Netball season, beating her former boss Lisa Alexander to the position.

Anderson, who has most recently been assistant coach to the national team under Alexander, will replace Roselee Jencke, who stepped down after 11 years in the role.

It's the 46-year-old's first head coach position.

Impressed by a strong run home in the 2020 season, with six wins from their last nine games including victories over three of the top four sides, Anderson said she was excited by the opportunity to work with a team on the rise.

"It's a dynamic and talented playing group and I was particularly impressed by the manner in which they finished the season after some close losses early in the year - that shows true character and I know we can build on that in 2021," Anderson said.

"They show plenty of variety and skill on court and never back down, so if we can continue to build our combinations with those characteristics at our core, this group will match it with any team in the league."

As well as their promising finish to the season, the Firebirds have Gretel Bueta set to return from maternity leave and recruited mid-court dynamo Kim Ravaillion.

Primarily at wing attack or in the goal circle, Anderson played for the Sydney Swifts in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy before moving to New Zealand for stints with the Southern Steel and Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championship era.

She also made 20 appearances for the Diamonds.

She made the transition to coaching following her retirement, with five seasons as assistant coach at the NSW Swifts, including two grand final appearances, and two years as assistant with the Australian team.
