Texas' Ward granted medical hardship

Texas guard Varez Ward and forward Shawn Williams each has been granted a medical hardship waiver from the Big 12 for the 2009-10 season, the school announced Thursday.

Ward will be a redshirt sophomore for the upcoming 2010-11 season, while Williams will be a redshirt freshman.

Ward, who started each of Texas' first three games and averaged 6.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 23.0 minutes per contest, ruptured his right quadriceps tendon during warm-ups prior to the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic championship game against Pittsburgh on Nov. 24 in Kansas City.

He underwent surgery Dec. 1 and missed the remainder of the season.

Williams suffered a left ankle injury against Texas State on Dec. 12. He underwent surgery Jan. 20 and missed the remainder of the season.

Williams saw action in seven of Texas' first eight games, averaging 1.6 points and 1.7 rebounds in 5.6 minutes per contest.
