The NFL's backup QB crisis: Quality fill-ins are going extinct

The most undervalued and underappreciated position in the NFL has become the backup quarterback.

Other than seven failed starters getting second or third chances as backups for teams that didn't draft them, the NFL is developing very few backup QBs who could turn into starters. Salaries for backups have dropped dramatically, too. The league is clinging dangerously to an aging group of 14 quarterbacks who came into the league between 2002 and 2010, several of whom are inching closer to retirement.
