The Patriots have informed veteran punter Ryan Allen that they are releasing him, a league source confirms. This means that fifth-round pick Jake Bailey, of Stanford, has won the job. Despite a strong performance in Super Bowl LIII, Allen was viewed to have longer odds to keep the job he's held since 2013, because the Patriots traded up to select Bailey. A right-footed punter, Bailey has a powerful leg, and will also assume Allen's role as a holder on field goals.

"We love Josh. I love Josh. I'm just glad to have him back," WR Phillip Dorsett says of Josh Gordon's return. "He looks good. When you haven't seen one of your brothers in a long time, and you see him, it's definitely refreshing."

Pats players 'pulling for' reinstated WR Gordon

Patriots players expressed excitement about welcoming back Josh Gordon, who was conditionally reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday, with team captain Matthew Slater saying, "We're going to do everything we can to support him."

LT Isaiah Wynn played the first three series of the game for the Patriots, which was his first action since tearing his Achilles in August of 2018. That was arguably the most significant news for the Patriots in the game, as the team has gradually brought Wynn along his preseason and his Achilles has responded well. The 2018 first-round pick out of Georgia is the projected opening-day starter.

Patriots QB Tom Brady will not play in Saturday night's preseason game against the Titans, per sources. Brady was sharp in two days of joint practices with the Titans on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, the Patriots have a quick turnaround with their next preseason game on Thursday at home against the Panthers.

Schefter: Gordon's reinstatement is a boost for Pats offense (1:27)

News that WR Josh Gordon is being reinstated by the NFL — first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter — comes at a time in which the Patriots are especially thin at the position. Julian Edelman (thumb) has yet to participate in training camp, first-round pick N'Keal Harry came up hobbling in the preseason opener and hasn't practiced since, and veterans Phillip Dorsett and Maurice Harris left Wednesday's practice due to injury and remain sidelined. So Tom Brady was throwing to mostly undrafted free agents and late-round picks in the most recent practice, but in a flash, that all changes with Gordon's reinstatement.
