Elise Christie claimed the first world title of her career with victory in the women's 1500m final at the World Short Track Championships in Rotterdam on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, a previous winner of eight silver and bronze world medals, beat Canada's Marianne St-Gelais and Suk Hee Shim of South Korea to take her first gold.

Her win capped a fine recovery for Christie from the nightmare of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, when she was disqualified from all three of her races.

Christie went on to finish fourth in the 500m final but will have the chance of another medal on Sunday when she competes over her favoured 1000m distance.

Christie said: "I changed my tactic in the final and went out in front to give myself the best opportunity, and it worked out -- it's pretty amazing.

"I feel I am in a win-win situation tomorrow as the pressure is off. I came here and did what I needed to do, so I can gain from that."
