PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Elise Christie faces a race against time to prove her fitness ahead of Thursday's 1000 metre short track speed skating with doctors set to make a call Tuesday to whether she can participate or not.

Christie crashed out and was disqualified from Saturday's 1500m semifinal, sustaining an injury to her right ankle in the process. She left the track on a stretcher and went to hospital for scans.

They ruled out a break in her ankle, but she has suffered soft tissue damage, according to Great Britain's chef de mission Mike Hay.

When asked whether she will likely compete on Thursday, Hay answered: "It's how the ankle responds. She wants to make it but it might not be her decision at the end of the day -- you've got to be able to get the skate on your foot. We'll have to wait and see what the doctors say and take it from there.

"There must be some chance or they wouldn't be saying we can wait until Tuesday, we'll just have to sit tight for the next 48 hours. We've got a programme put together to her the best opportunity but it's very much in the balance. If she's able to skate she will, I don't think it's a problem for her mentally."

Britain now sit on four medals the 2018 Winter Olympics -- their minimum target is five -- with James Woods finishing an agonising fourth in the men's skiing freestyle on Sunday.

Hay said Woods was left "very frustrated" but the chef de mission is hopeful Britain will be able to add further medals to their current quartet regardless of whether Christie is able to compete or not.

"We've got opportunities left, Billy Morgan and Dave Ryding have both got chances," Hay said. "Curling isn't looking fantastic at the moment but it's a long round robin and Eve [Muirhead] is still in there with a chance and I don't want to tempt fate with Elise, so I'll leave that one alone."
