Singapore's Olympic champion Joseph Schooling out of 100m freestyle

Singapore's Joseph Schooling was eliminated from the men's 100m freestyle competition on Tuesday evening in his first appearance of the Tokyo Games.

Schooling made history by becoming Singapore's first-ever Olympic champion at Rio 2016, winning the gold medal in the 100m butterfly by beating a trio of runner-ups including boyhood hero Michael Phelps, who remains the most-decorated Olympian of all time.

Although he had done enough in the freestyle last time out to qualify for the semifinals in Brazil, Schooling's time of 49.84 seconds on Tuesday was not enough to see him repeat the feat as he finished 39th overall - with only the 16 quickest timings advancing from the heats.

Schooling will now turn his attentions to his best event, with heats for the 100m butterfly taking place on Thursday evening.
