Caeleb Dressel, Simone Manuel win athlete of year honors at Golden Goggles

LOS ANGELES -- Caeleb Dressel won male athlete of the year as the lone nominee in the category at the Golden Goggle awards that honor USA Swimming's top athletes and performances of the year.

Simone Manuel earned female athlete of the year honors, beating out Katie Ledecky, Lilly King and Regan Smith on Sunday night.

Dressel also won male race of the year for his 100-meter butterfly title at last summer's world championships in South Korea.

Smith was honored as breakout performer of the year for her results at worlds. The 17-year-old swimmer from Minnesota lowered the world record in the 200-meter backstroke semifinals before nearly doing it again while winning the final. Her 100 back split in the 400 medley relay set a world record, too.

Smith won female race of the year for her winning effort in the 200 back. She shared the relay performance of the year award for the women's 400 medley in South Korea.

Nathan Adrian received the perseverance award for overcoming testicular cancer to swim at worlds.

Mike Parratto was honored as coach of the year.
