Shaq delos Santos faces tough task of trimming national pool

Shaq delos Santos and his coaching staff are set to name 18 to 20 volleyball players to the national women's team pool.

"The coaches and I need to discuss it well. We no longer held a tryout where they need to be competitive because we already know the quality of their game," said delos Santos after the team practice held on Thursday.

The pool will be further trimmed down to 14 players (12 active and two reserves), who will represent the country in the Jakarta Asian Games in August.

"It's a difficult decision. Everybody can be part of the pool but we also need to check the commitments of the players," Delos Santos continued.

As it is now, there's a huge challenge in terms of scheduling practices and training camps because of the players' commitments to their respective mother teams. The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is still ongoing, while the Philippine Superliga (PSL) will begin later this month.

"We'll check the players' training schedules. We can't make it an everyday training (for the national team) because of the conflict," said Delos Santos.

"The timeline is very short but we're used to this kind of situations. I told the players that we need to face this instead of not doing our part. We'll do what we can for the team," he added.

Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) officials will also meet once the coaches submit the final lineup.

The official pool members will begin their training on Wednesday.
