'Smiling' Margielyn Didal falls way short as 13-year-old Japanese wins historic skate gold

Margielyn Didal wrapped up a festive Tokyo Olympics campaign with a seventh-place finish in the women's street skateboarding event Monday at the Ariake Urban Sports Park in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist, who reached the eight-person final by placing seventh in the preliminary round of the sport's inaugural staging in the Games, garnered 7.52 points - 4.55 from her first two runs and then 2.97 in the trick category.

Didal only managed to stick the landing once during tricks as she spilled in her other four attempts and dealt with evident pain throughout the finale.

But the 22-year-old skate star was hardly fazed and got up each and every time with a massive smile on her face, much to the delight of everyone present in the venue. Her infectious grin also gained her a lot of fans on social media, be it from the Philippines, the host country, and even other nations.

At just 13 years old, Japan's Momiji Nishiya took home the first-ever women's street skateboarding Olympic gold medal after amassing 15.26 points in the final.

Rayssa Leal of Brazil, also just 13, won silver by scoring a total of 14.64 points, while Funa Nakayama was the second hometown bet to finish at the podium after collecting 14.49 points, good for bronze.

Finishing ahead of Didal were American skater Alexis Sablone (13.57), Roos Zwetsloot of the Netherlands (11.26), and China's Wenhui Zeng (7.52).

Didal finished ahead of Japan's Aori Nishimura (6.92), the world no. 3 skater who won the 2021 Street Skateboarding World Championships back in June.
