Novak Djokovic fortunate to 'still have his eye' after Rome celebrations

Novak Djokovic's fourth Italian Open title celebrations in Rome almost left a mark on the world No.1 after a champagne cork prematurely popped and hit him in the nose.

With just under a week until the French Open begins, the incident occurred while the Serb was aiming to toast a 6-4 6-3 win in Sunday's final against Roger Federer.

"I am very, very fortunate to still have my eye," Djokovic said. "We had an argument with Mr Champagne and he certainly threw a punch I will not forget."

Djokovic broke Federer early in the second set and looked particularly dangerous from the baseline as he claimed his 19th win in 39 matches against the Swiss.

Extending his winning streak to 22, Djokovic has rightfully won every high-ranking tournament he has entered since last autumn and is in high spirits as he heads to Paris on Sunday.

"So far, this is the best season of my life," said the 27-year-old. "I don't know how it will go at Roland Garros, but I'm very confident."

Djokovic, who has never won the French Open but was runner-up in 2012 and 2014, continued: "I'm playing with great joy and concentration and I hope to continue.

"This has been a very exciting week and today was my best match. It's always a big challenge to play Roger and obviously I'm very pleased."
