Johanna Konta through to US Open third round for first time

Great Britain's Johanna Konta is through to the US Open third round for the first time in her career after an epic triumph over world No.9 Garbine Muguruza.

Brit Konta produced a superb performance to win through 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-2 in three hours 23 minutes on Court 17 - which has been officially clocked as the longest women's match in US Open history.

Muguruza made the French Open quarter-finals and the final at Wimbledon earlier this year but could not find an answer to Konta, who sealed a shock victory at Flushing Meadows and the biggest of her career to date.

Konta had only managed one grand slam win prior to this tournament but she now has two in three days and goes through to face Germany's Andrea Petkovic in round three.

It marked a 15th consecutive victory for the British No.2, who has not lost since bowing out of Wimbledon to Maria Sharapova earlier this summer. It is also her first victory against an opponent in the top 80 of the WTA world rankings.

"I'm just so tired," Konta said. "She probably didn't play her best today but she's an incredible fighter and no matter what level she brings to the court she always brings her top 10 mentality.

"I had to fight for every point and I'm just really happy to come back another day."

Muguruza, who suffered back-to-back first round defeats in both Toronto and Cincinnati, made 59 unforced errors and 13 double faults.

In stark contrast, Konta appears to be a player transformed under Spanish coach Esteban Carril and now has a realistic chance of making the last 16 in New York.
