Andy Murray believes finishing the season as world No.2 would give him an advantage going into next year's Australian Open.

The Scot reached his first ever Paris Masters final with a 6-4, 6-3 win over David Ferrer on Saturday, and will play Novak Djokovic for the title.

Should Murray win on Sunday, he will be guaranteed to finish the season second in the ATP rankings ahead of the World Tour Finals later this month.

"It's nice, but it wasn't the goal at the beginning of the year," Murray told Sky Sports. "Rather than being really pumped to finish as No.2, it's more about the seeding for the Australian Open. It can help, maybe give you a slight advantage rather than being seeded No.3 or No.4.

"It will be the highest I've ever finished. That's a positive, and I've still got the Davis Cup final to look forward to. It's something I've never played in before. There are a few things I've never achieved before close to the end of year, which gives me lots of motivation."

Being seeded second in Melbourne would see Murray avoid world No.1 Novak Djokovic until the final, should both men progress that far, though the Serb has beaten the Scot in three previous Australian Open finals.

Meanwhile, Murray also gave an update on the back problems he suffered in Friday's quarterfinal win over Richard Gasquet.

"My back felt better today," he added. "It was a little bit stiff when I got up this morning, so I spent a couple of hours with my physio, and that helped.

"I felt like I served well today -- much, much bigger and more consistently than yesterday."
