Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna crashed out from the US Open men's doubles competition as Sania Mirza progressed in the mixed doubles event with her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig on Friday.
Leander Paes and Andre Begemann lost 6-2, 5-7, 4-6 to Stephane Robert (France) and Dudi Sela (Israel) in the first round of the men's doubles in just under two hours.
Paes and Begemann started their encounter in a resounding manner with two service breaks in the first and fifth game to grab the first set at 6-2.
Enjoying a service break in the second set as well, the Indo-German pair looked like serving out at 5-4 before Sela and Roberts got a break back in the 10th game while getting another break in the 12th game to win the set 7-5.
Two days ago, Paes and Martina Hingis had won their first round mixed doubles match at the US Open.
Sania - Dodig advance
Later on Friday, Sania Mirza and her mixed doubles partner Ivan Dodig beat Taylor Townsend and Donald Young reach the second round.
The top seeds saw off the American duo 6-4, 6-4, giving Mirza her second victory this week at Flushing Meadows after her opening women's doubles win with Barbora Strycova.
Bopanna bows out of men's doubles, advances in mixed
There was disappointment for Rohan Bopanna, though, who crashed out of the men's doubles with Danish partner Frederik Nielsen. The pair lost 6-2, 7-5 to Brian Baker and Marcus Daniell in the second round.
The Indo-Danish pair were broken twice before they conceded the first set 6-2.
It was turning out to be a cakewalk for the Kiwi-US pair as they were ready to serve for the match at 5-3 before Bopanna and Nielsen broke back to make it 5-5 raising visions of a fightback.
With the help of a mini-break, Bopanna and Nielsen were up 3-0 in the tie-breaker only to commit lot of unforced errors before eventually losing the match in 74 minutes.
However, Bopanna who also played his mixed doubles first round match later in the evening alongside Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski beat US pair of Noah Rubin and Jamie Loeb 7-5 6-4 in 67 minutes to advance to the second round.
