STANFORD, Calif. -- Dismissed Cardinal point guard JJ Hones was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of driving under the influence on a golf cart, reckless driving, evading a police officer in a marked vehicle and resisting arrest, according to Stanford police.
The school announced Monday that coach Tara VanDerveer had dismissed Hones from the program for a violation of team rules but didn't elaborate. That marked the end of her injury-plagued career.
Lt. Grant Cunningham of Stanford's Department of Public Safety said Hones was arrested on campus at 1:38 a.m. on May 2 after driving the golf cart recklessly and failing to obey officers' commands. Cunningham said she failed a series of field sobriety tests and was then booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on $5,000 bail.
Charges are pending.
Hones was just the second player kicked off the team during VanDerveer's stellar 24-year tenure on The Farm. Tanda Rucker, a member of the Cardinal's second NCAA title team in 1992, was dismissed from the program in '93.
Hones had attended a San Francisco Giants game with her teammates April 30 and was using crutches following left knee surgery. The Cardinal were honored for their runner-up NCAA finish to two-time defending champion Connecticut. Hones said that night she planned to be ready for next season.
A fourth-year junior, she planned to return for a fifth year next season as long as she was healthy. She underwent microfracture surgery on her troublesome left knee after the season, the same knee that has ailed her most of her collegiate career.
Hones played 98 games in her injury-shortened time at Stanford, missing all or parts of two seasons with left knee injuries. She played in two national championship games and averaged 5.4 points and 3.0 assists per game in her career.
