Dean, No. 8 Bruins rally for win over No. 19 Sun Devils
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Japreece Dean used her disappointment from her previous game as fuel.
Dean scored 18 points to lead No. 8 UCLA past No. 19 Arizona State 70-61 on Sunday.
The senior guard guided the Bruins their ninth straight win over the Sun Devils, with help from Charisma Osborne's 15 points and 14 from Michaela Onyenwere as the Bruins (19-2, 8-2 Pac-12) bounced back from Friday's blowout loss against No. 16 Arizona.
UCLA trailed 34-32 at halftime, but forced five turnovers while outscoring Arizona State 20-10 in the third quarter. Osborne had 10 points in the period.
Dean, who went 0 for 11 from the field during Friday's 92-66 defeat, made her first shot of the game and scored eight first-quarter points.
"I knew I had to find a way to bounce back and to see it go in, it felt really good," Dean said. "I wouldn't say we needed that (loss), but it showed us something and we don't ever want to feel that again."
UCLA scored 24 points off Arizona State's 16 turnovers. The Bruins committed just 10 turnovers.
"We got humiliated. We got punched in the mouth on Friday night," Bruins coach Cori Close said. "The work that our staff as well as our team did to get their hearts and minds ready, I thought that this was a gut-check and a mindset check. That was the most consistent 40 minutes of energy that we've had in conference play."
Robbi Ryan and Jamie Ruden led the Sun Devils (16-6, 6-4) with 15 points apiece.
The Sun Devils closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. Reili Richardson and Ryan hit back-to-back 3-pointers during that stretch, and Arizona State scored the first four points of the second quarter to go up 24-15.
But UCLA was in control by the fourth quarter, starting it with an eight-point lead and going up by as many as 13. The Sun Devils got as close as six down in the final minute.
Arizona State coach Charli Turner Thorne said she thought fatigue from a triple-overtime win Friday afternoon over USC was a factor.
"We didn't have a good third quarter, obviously," Turner Thorne said. "We didn't feel like we had a very good first half and we were still up two. As much as I love this team and as good as they are, I don't think I've ever coached a team that's given up so many open shots in a season."
BIG PICTURE
UCLA: It will be interesting to see if the Bruins remain in the top 10 after their 92-66 loss at Arizona. Next up is a visit from No. 6 Stanford on Friday.
Arizona State: The Sun Devils have lost two of three. The Bruins were the first of three top-10 teams they'll play in eight days. Road games at No. 10 Oregon State and No. 3 Oregon are next, rematches of games the Sun Devils won at home when both teams were in the top five.
