India lose to China, out of Sudirman Cup

NANNING (China) - India were knocked out of the Sudirman Cup after losing 5-0 to China in the second and final group fixture on Wednesday.

In the first match, India's mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy lost 5-21, 11-21 to Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping, who are ranked No. 2 in the world.

In men's singles, Sameer Verma once again took the court after Kidambi Srikanth suffered an injury. "Won't be playing today due to an injury caused during practice," Srikanth had tweeted ahead of the match.

Verma fought for an hour and 11 minutes before losing 17-21, 20-22 against Olympic champion Chen Long as India fell 2-0 behind.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 21-18, 15-21, 17-21 to the world No. 7 pair of Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong.

Saina Nehwal then went down 12-21, 17-21 to All England champion Chen Yufei in women's singles, while the world No. 3 women's doubles pair of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan beat Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki 21-12, 21-15.

India -- who lost 3-2 to Malaysia in their opening group fixture on Tuesday -- had reached the quarterfinals in the 2011 and 2017 editions of the Sudirman Cup.
