A look at Day 13 of Washington's fall camp

SEATTLE -- Here is a quick-hitting look at Washington's 13th day of fall camp:

Best practice of fall camp

After a Saturday scrimmage Washington coach Steve Sarkisian said “lacked a little bit of energy” the Huskies returned to the field Monday and put together one of their best performances of fall camp.

“I thought this was, arguably, our best practice of training camp up to this point,” Sarkisian said. “Our guys really responded to the challenge. It was great.”

Leading the way was quarterback Keith Price, who looked fresh while finding open receivers, including Kevin Smith on a 25-yard completion.

“I thought he was tremendous today,” Sarkisian said when asked about Price.

Throughout fall camp, Sarkisian has pushed his offensive players to pick up the tempo, and Washington seemed to take a step in that direction on the first day of the third week of camp.

"Now is the time to start getting our bodies back to right, so when we hit game week next week, we’re feeling really good about ourselves," Sarkisian said.

Washington on the mend

Washington received some positive health-related news with offensive lineman Erik Kohler in pads for the first time this season -- he did not participate in team drills -- after suffering a knee injury on the first day of fall camp.

Safety Justin Glenn was also back in uniform, joining cornerback Tre Watson, who shed the yellow non-contact jersey.

“I feel like we’re on the mend,” Sarkisian said. “We’re kind of on the backswing now. We hit a little funk there of just getting some injuries, but I think we’re on the mend.”

Kevin Smith gets one step closer

Smith continued to wear a yellow jersey but, when he was able to get on the field during team drills, he made plays.

“He looks explosive,” Sarkisian said. “He looks fast. He’s such great spirit. He’s a good leader about himself and the kids really respond to him, so he’s on the mend. We’ll see where he’s at. With those kind of guys, it’s day-to-day.”

Play of the day

Redshirt freshman Derrick Brown continues to get a lot of reps with the second-team offense, and he makes the most of it when he gets the opportunity.

He showed off his arm with a well-placed ball to Cody Bruns on a touchdown pass that traveled about 60 yards in the air.

Quotable

• When asked about 88-year-old usher George Hickman, who died Sunday, Sarkisian said, “He has always welcomed everybody with open arms. He always had a great smile on his face. He was so good to myself, my family. I know he was that way with all of our players and it was an honor to know him and be a part of his life. He won’t be forgotten, that’s for sure."

• Brown, who punted in high school, booted a few balls during practice. Sarkisian said he wanted to see the quarterback kick a few because he is trying to get all of his emergency plans in order as a precautionary measure for later in the season.
