Diamondbacks blank Dodgers, 13–0

The Diamondbacks defeated the Dodgers, 13–0, after LA entered the game with a 92–44 record. It is the largest shutout against a team at least 40 games above .500 at the time since 1930, when the Indians blanked the 80–38 Philadelphia Athletics, 15–0.

Martinez hits four home runs

J.D. Martinez tied a major-league record by hitting four home runs on Monday night. But none of the previous 17 players to hit four homers in a game did so against a team that was at least 25 games above .500 at the time. Martinez also became the first player since Mike Schmidt in 1976 to hit three home runs in a game in the seventh inning or later.

Ray fans 53 Dodgers in one season

Robbie Ray struck out 14 batters on Monday night, increasing his total to 53 this season against the Dodgers. That is the most strikeouts for a pitcher in one season against the Dodgers since 1908, when Christy Mathewson had 58 for the Giants. Mathewson went 7–0 against Brooklyn that year.

Dodgers have lost nine of 10

The Dodgers have now lost nine of their last 10 games. The only other teams in major-league history to lose at least nine times in a 10-game stretch––after they had already won at least 90 games that season––were the Phillies in both 1964 and 2011. The former suffered a 10-game losing streak immediately after winning its 90th game; and the latter lost 9 of 10 following its 97th win. The 1964 team famously missed the playoffs, and the 2011 team was eliminated by the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs.

Stanton’s 33 solo homers tie Maris’s total in 1961

Giancarlo Stanton’s home run on Monday night was his 33rd with nobody on base this season. When Roger Maris hit a then-record 61 home runs in 1961, 33 of his homers were solo shots. Stanton’s 33 one-run homers are the most for any player since David Ortiz hit 33 in 2006.

Indians extend winning streak

The Indians won their 12th consecutive game on Monday, after they fashioned a 14-game winning streak in 2016. Cleveland is the first team in more than half a century to register winning streaks of at least a dozen games in each of two consecutive seasons. That had last been done by the 1965–1966 Giants, and before them the 1960–1961 Yankees. (More than 10 teams did so prior to 1960.)

Longest current hitless streaks: Price, Sandoval and Colon

Pablo Sandoval went 0-for-4 at Coors Field and is now hitless in his last 33 at-bats. The three longest current streaks of at-bats without a hit among active (or disabled) major-league players belong to David Price (37), Sandoval, and Bartolo Colon (32).

Molina catches shutout and provides all the offense

Carlos Martinez threw a complete-game shutout and Yadier Molina provided the offense with a two-run single in the Cardinals’ 2–0 win against the Padres. It was the 130th shutout caught by Molina in his major-league career––122 in the regular season and eight in the playoffs––but only the third in which he drove home all the Cardinals’ runs. He also did that in 2011 against the Reds in a 3–0 win and on Opening Day of the 2014 season, a 1–0 victory also against Cincinnati.

Pujols stays hot

Albert Pujols maintained his torrid pace by going 3-for-5 with an RBI against Oakland. Pujols is 12-for-22 with 12 RBIs over his last five games. The only other players to register at least 12 hits and 12 RBIs over a five-game span this season were Bryce Harper and Miguel Sano, and Pujols had never before done that over any five-game span of his major-league career.

Calhoun is extra special

Kole Calhoun’s two-run triple in the 11th inning gave the Angels an 11–9 win over the Athletics. Calhoun leads the major leagues with seven extra-inning RBIs this season.

Judge walked four times

Aaron Judge drew four walks and added a single in the Yankees’ win at Baltimore. Judge was the first Yankees rookie since Tom Tresh in 1962 to walk four times in one game. Wally Pipp (in 1915), Tresh and Judge are the only Yankees rookies ever to draw four walks and record a hit in the same game.

Hosmer too much for Tigers

Eric Hosmer was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the Royals’ win at Detroit. Hosmer is batting .379 with five homers and 17 RBIs against the Tigers this season. The only other major- league players who have matched or exceeded those triple-crown totals against one team this year are Jose Ramirez, also versus the Tigers (.473/8/22) and Miguel Sano against the Royals (.413/5/23).

Familiar script in Mets’ win over Phillies

The Mets blanked the Phillies 10–0 last month and they forged a 10–0 lead against Philadelphia in their 11–7 victory on Monday. The Mets also took double-digit shutout leads in two games against the Phillies last season (in 12–1 and 17–0 victories), but the only other time they did so twice versus one team within one season before was in 1976 against the Cubs.

Keuchel improves to 7–1 in road games

Dallas Keuchel allowed two runs in 7⅔ innings and earned the win in the Astros’ victory at Seattle. Keuchel entered this season with a 20–29 career record and 4.60 ERA away from home. But he is 7–1 with a 3.47 ERA in road games this year

Two Pirates rookies drive in four runs

Josh Bell and Max Moroff drove in four runs apiece on Monday to become the first pair of Pirates rookies to each produce at least four RBIs in the same game. The last rookie teammates to do that for any team were J.T. Realmuto and Enrique Hernandez with the 2014 Marlins.

Hamilton hits walkoff homer

Billy Hamilton’s home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Reds a 5–4 win over the Brewers. Hamilton, whose career home-run rate is now one per 115 at-bats, was an unlikely candidate to hit a walkoff homer. Among the more than 500 current big-league players who have hit at least one home run in the majors, the only ones with lower lifetime home-run rates than Hamilton who have hit walkoff homers in their careers are Eric Young (one HR every 146 ABs) and Adeiny Hechavarria (one HR per 128 ABs).
