Westbrook can’t find the basket in a triple-double performance

Russell Westbrook registered 10 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists but made only three of his 17 field-goal attempts in Oklahoma City’s win over Indiana on Wednesday. Westbrook’s .176 field-goal percentage is the lowest in a triple-double performance in nearly 18 years, since the Clippers’ Lamar Odom made only two of 13 field-goal attempts (.154) while recording 10 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against the Rockets on December 30, 1999. There were 773 triple-double performances from New Year’s Eve in 1999 through Tuesday night.

Cousins and Davis thriving together

DeMarcus Cousins had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Anthony Davis chipped in with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the Pelicans’ win over the Bucks on Wednesday. Davis and Cousins have each produced at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in the same game nine times since Cousins made his debut with New Orleans on February 23, 2017. No other pair of teammates has done that more than once since the Davis/Cousins pairing and the only duos to do it once are Carmelo Anthony and Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.

Williams has another big night off the bench

Lou Williams came off the bench and scored 31 points and handed out eight assists in the Clippers’ win over the Magic on Wednesday night. It marked the sixth time Williams had at least 30 points and five assists in a reserve role in his career. Those are the most such games for any active player. The only other active players with more than two 30-point/5-assist games off the bench are Jamal Crawford and Manu Ginobili (four each).

Irving-Brown tandem brings Celtics fans back to the Bird-McHale era

Kyrie Irving scored 33 points and made 12 of his 19 field-goal attempts and Jaylen Brown was 9-for-12 from the field in a 26-point performance in Boston’s win over Denver on Wednesday. It’s the second time that Irving and Brown each scored 25 or more points and converted at least 60 percent of their field-goal attempts in the same game this season, having also done that on November 18. The last pair of Boston teammates to do that multiple times in the same season were Kevin McHale and Larry Bird, who had two such games together in 1989-90.

37 points and no three-pointers for DeRozan

DeMar DeRozan scored 37 points, none of which came from beyond the three-point line, leading the Raptors to a win over the Suns on Wednesday. That marked the 11th time DeRozan scored 35 or more points in a game without the benefit of a three-pointer since the start of the 2015-16 season. Those are the most such games for any NBA player over the last three seasons. The only other player with more than four games with 35 or more points and no threes over that time frame is Anthony Davis (nine).

Another big second-half comeback for Portland

The Trail Blazers overcame a 16-point third-quarter deficit and defeated the Heat in Miami on Wednesday. It marked the second time Portland came back from a deficit of 15 or more points in the second half on the road this season, having also done that on November 25 at Washington. In the seven seasons prior to this one (2010-11 to 2016-17), the Trail Blazers were just 2-101 on the road when trailing by 15 or more points in the second half. The only other NBA teams with two or fewer such wins over that time frame were Denver (zero), New York (one), Philadelphia (one) and Detroit (two).

Rockets win eleventh straight

The Rockets defeated the Hornets for their eleventh consecutive win on Wednesday. Houston became the third NBA team to register a winning streak of more than 10 games in the early going this season, joining the Celtics (16 straight) and Cavaliers (13 straight). This is only the fourth time in NBA history that at least three teams recorded winning streaks of more than ten games within their first 30 games in the same season, The only other times that happened: 1973-74 (Celtics, Bulls and Bucks), 1996-97 (Bulls, SuperSonics and Jazz) and 2010-11 (Spurs, Heat, Mavericks and Celtics).

Wizards’ starters all chip in

Each of Washington’s five starters registered 10 or more points in the team’s win over Memphis on Wednesday. It’s the 26th time the Wizards received double-digit point totals from all of their starters in a regulation game since Scott Brooks became the team’s head coach in 2016. Washington’s record is 21-5 in those contests.

Marlins deal another big bat

After trading Giancarlo Stanton (132 RBIs in 2017) to the Yankees on Monday, the Marlins unloaded another big bat, dealing Marcell Ozuna (124 RBIs) to the Cardinals on Wednesday. In 2017, the Marlins became the 67th team with at least two players with 120 or more RBIs in the same season since MLB began tracking that statistic in 1920, but they are the first of those teams to lose multiple 120-RBI men during the offseason.

Win number 300 for Lehtonen

Dallas’ Kari Lehtonen earned his 300th NHL win in his 624th start on Wednesday night against the Islanders on Long Island. He passes Miikka Kiprusoff for the most NHL starts by a Finnish-born goaltender. In addition, Kiprusoff becomes the eighth goaltender born outside North America to earn as many as 300 wins, joining Henrik Lundqvist (419), Dominik Hasek (389), Evgeni Nabokov (353), Nikolai Khabibulin (333), Miikka Kiprusoff (319), Olaf Kolzig (303) and Tomas Vokoun (300).

Ceci scores in second straight contest

Ottawa defenseman Cody Ceci scored a goal for the second straight game, helping the Senators defeat the Rangers, 3-2, on Wednesday night. Ceci, who has just four goals on the season, also scored in back to back games in mid-October. Only four other defensemen have scored goals in consecutive games twice this season: Aaron Ekblad (Panthers), Erik Johnson (Avalanche), Zach Werenski (Blue Jackets) and Nikita Zaitsev (Maple Leafs).

Bruins late rally beats Red Wings

It appeared that Detroit would win on Wednesday night for just the second time in its last 11 games. However, the Bruins got a score-tying goal from David Pastrnak with 86 seconds remaining in the third period, and then Brad Marchand scored the game-winner 35 seconds into overtime to give the Bruins a 3-2 victory. It’s the first time this season that Boston won a game in which it trailed with less than two minutes remaining in the third period. However it is a league-high third time that Detroit skated away with less than two points after leading a game with two minutes or less remaining in the third period.
