Westbrook and the “Big O”

Russell Westbrook posted another triple-double in Oklahoma City’s win over Detroit on Saturday night (17 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists). Westbrook has produced seven triple-doubles in 18 games this season. The only other player in NBA history to record seven or more triple-doubles in his first 18 games of a season was Oscar Robertson in 1961-62. The “Big O” had 12 triple-doubles in his first 18 games that season.

Westbrook has scored 348 points, grabbed 119 rebounds and handed out 131 assists over his last 11 games. The only other player in NBA history with that many points, rebounds and assists over any 11-game span was, you guessed it, Oscar Robertson. Robertson had several 11-game stretches like that, the last coming during the 1964-65 season.

Leonard leading Spurs on the road

Kawhi Leonard scored 19 points in the Spurs’ win over the Wizards in Washington improving their road record to 10-0 this season. Leonard has scored 258 points in those 10 road games. The only other players in the Spurs’ NBA history to score that many points in their first 10 road games of a season were George Gervin, who did it six times, and David Robinson, who did it three times. Gervin scored 344 points in his first 10 road games in 1981-82. The most points Robinson ever scored in his first 10 road games of a season was 293 in 1994-95.

Conley scores the Grizzlies’ last 11 points

Mike Conley scored the Grizzlies’ last 11 points in their win over the Heat on Saturday night. Conley is the third player this season to score his team’s last 11 or more points in a win. Kawhi Leonard scored the Spurs’ last 12 points in their win in Miami on October 30 and Paul George scored the Pacers’ last 12 points in their win over the Lakers on November 1.

Hornets play another close game

Kemba Walker (28 points) and Jeremy Lamb (18 points, 17 rebounds) led the Hornets to a 107-102 victory over the Knicks. It was the tenth time this season that the Hornets played a game that was decided by six or fewer points, the most such games for any NBA team this season. They are 5-5 in those ten games.

Price is 13-1-1

Carey Price improved his record to 13–1–1 in 15 games this season with a 2–1 victory in overtime against the Red Wings in Detroit. Price is the first goaltender in Canadiens history to win at least 13 of his first 15 games in one season. Before this year the high for wins by a Canadiens netminder in his 15 games of a season was 12, a mark set by Charlie Hodge in 1960–61 and matched twice by Ken Dryden (in 1976–77 and 1977–78). Besides Price, the only goaltender currently in the NHL to win 13 of his first 15 games in any season is Ben Bishop, who did that with Tampa Bay in 2013–14.

Sidney ties Mario

•The Penguins posted a 4–3 shootout victory over the Devils on Saturday but they only got the chance to win that skills competition thanks to Sidney Crosby, whose goal with 14 seconds remaining in the third period tied the score at 3–3. It was the fourth time that Crosby scored a tying goal in the final minute of the third period during his NHL career, tying the Penguins franchise record set by Mario Lemieux. Crosby’s last-minute tying goal in Saturday’s was the first for the Penguins since Dec. 13, 2014, when Kris Letang deadlocked a game in Columbus at the 19:49 mark of the third period.

Barkov has figured out shootout

Aleksander Barkov was the only player to score in the shootout which gave the Florida Panthers a 2–1 win over the Blue Jackets. Barkov, who made his NHL debut with the Panthers at age 18 in October 2013, scored on only three of his 13 shootout attempts during his first two seasons in the league (23 percent) but he’s scored six times in eight tries over the two seasons since then (75 percent).

Marner garners two assists for Leafs

Mitch Marner assisted on two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their 4–2 win over the Capitals. It was the third multiple-assist game for Marner, the most this season by any NHL rookie. The 19-year-old Marner is the first teenager to produce three multiple-assist games in one season for the Maple Leafs since Vincent Damphousse had three such games for Toronto in 1986–87.

Turris off to a good start

Kyle Turris scored a tiebreaking goal with 3:32 left to play in the third period and that goal earned the Senators a 2–1 win over the Hurricanes. Turris, who has played in all 21 games for Ottawa, leads the team with 10 goals this season, at least twice as many as any other Senators player has scored. Turris also got off to a hot start for Ottawa last season, reaching double-figures in goals in his 20th game. These last two seasons have been quite a change for Turris, who never reached the 10-goal mark in fewer than 42 games in any of his seven other seasons in the NHL.

Schwartz nets two

Jaden Schwartz scored two goals for the St. Louis Blues in their 4–3 shootout win over Minnesota on Saturday. It was the second multiple-goal game of the season for Schwartz, who racked up a pair of goals in the Blues’ victory over San Jose on November 17. Schwartz is the first St. Louis player to produce a pair of multi-goal games during one calendar month since Vladimir Tarasenko had a three-goal game and a two-goal game in December 2014.
