DeRozan off to a magnificent start

• DeMar DeRozan scored 34 points leading the Raptors to a 96-87 win over the Heat on Friday night. DeRozan has scored at least 30 points in each of the five games he has played this season. Over the last 50 seasons, only four other NBA players scored 30 or more points in each of their first five games of a season: Nate Archibald (1972-73), Marques Johnson (1978-79), Adrian Dantley (1980-81) and Michael Jordan (1986-87). Archibald, Dantley and Jordan all went on to claim the league’s scoring title that season.

Curry’s record streak ends

• Stephen Curry missed all of his 10 shots from beyond the arc ending his NBA record streak of 157 consecutive games with a three-point field goal in Golden State’s loss to the Lakers on Friday night. It’s the 14th time a player has shot 0-for-10 or worse from beyond the arc since the NBA instituted the three-point line in 1979, but it’s only the second such performance by a reigning scoring champion. Kevin Durant was 0-for-10 on three-point attempts against the Clippers on November 3, 2010 after winning the NBA scoring title in 2009-10.

Wall’s double-double leads Wizards to win

• John Wall registered 21 points and 10 rebounds in Washington’s win over Atlanta on Friday night. Wall has recorded a double-double in all four games he has played this season, with his double-digit totals coming in points and assists in the first three contests. Prior to Wall, the last Wizards player with a double-double in each of his first four games of a season was Jeff Ruland, who did it in his first five games of the 1983-84 campaign.

Paul does it all in Clippers’ win over Memphis

• Chris Paul scored 27 points, handed out 11 assists and registered six steals in the Clippers’ win over Grizzlies on Friday night. It marked the 17th time in his career Paul posted at least 25 points, 10 assists and five steals in a game, by far the most such games for any player since the NBA began tracking steals in 1973-74, ahead of John Stockton (13). The next highest total by an active player is seven by Russell Westbrook.

Knicks starters put a damper on Chicago’s party

• The Knicks received balanced scoring from their five starters in their win over the Bulls in Chicago, getting 27 points from Kristaps Porzingis, 25 from Carmelo Anthony, 17 from Courtney Lee, 16 from Joakim Noah and 15 from Derrick Rose. It marked the first time in nearly 27 years that each of New York’s five starters scored 15 or more points in a regulation game on the road. On November 6, 1989, Patrick Ewing (29), Gerald Wilkins (21), Johnny Newman (19), Mark Jackson (17) and Charles Oakley (16) each topped the 15-point mark in a New York loss to the Magic in Orlando. (The Knicks have had two such road games that were decided in overtime since that contest.)

Suns work overtime for third time this season

• The Suns topped the Pelicans in overtime on Friday night. It’s the third overtime game Phoenix has played this season, previously losing to Oklahoma City in that fashion on October 28 and beating Portland in extra sessions on November 2. Only four other teams in NBA history played at least three overtime games in their first six games of a season: San Francisco (1962-63), Boston (1976-77), the Lakers (1991-92) and Charlotte (2005-06).

Leonard tops all player in points, rebounds and assists

• Kawhi Leonard led all players with 29 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in San Antonio’s win over the Jazz on Friday night. The only other player to register more points, rebounds and assists than any other player in a game this season is Russell Westbrook (October 28). The last Spurs player to do that was Tim Duncan, who led all players with 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists on February 10, 2009.

Lillard shoots lights out in Dallas

• Damian Lillard made 12 of his 18 field-goal attempts and 13 of his 14 free-throw attempts in a 42-point performance in Portland’s victory over the Mavericks in Dallas on Friday night. Lillard is the first Trail Blazer to make at least two-thirds of his shots from the field and 90 percent of his attempts from the line in a 40-point performance on the road in over 28 years, since Terry Porter scored 40 points, shot 14-for-18 from the field and 12-for-13 from the line in a Portland win over the Warriors at Golden State on March 18, 1988.

Blue Jackets post big win against Canadiens

• Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Scott Hartnell and Josh Anderson each scored twice for the Blue Jackets as they set franchise records for most goals and largest margin of victory in a game with a 10–0 rout of the Canadiens in Columbus. Columbus had never scored more than eight goals, nor won by a margin of more than seven goals, in any previous game in their 16-year history. The 10-goal loss matched the largest margin of defeat for the Canadiens in their 89 seasons in the NHL. They lost by 10 goals four times before, but only one other time since 1943. That was on Dec. 2, 1995, when they were beaten 11–1 by the Red Wings at the Montreal Forum, in what turned out to be Patrick Roy’s last game with the Canadiens. Roy gave up nine goals that night, and after he was pulled from the game by coach Mario Tremblay in the middle of the second period he stopped in front of team president Ronald Corey, who was sitting in the front row, and said “This is my last game in Montreal.” Roy was traded to Colorado four days later and he went on to lead the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup that season.

The Blue Jackets are the first NHL team to have four players score two goals or more in the same game since Feb. 10, 1993, when Robert Reichel (3 goals), Ronnie Stern (3), Gary Roberts (2) and Gary Suter (2) were the multiple-goal scorers for the Calgary Flames in a 13–1 win versus San Jose. Sixteen different Columbus players produced at least one point on Friday night (everyone but Ryan Murray, Lukas Sedlak and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky). That’s a Blue Jackets record for most players with points in one game (their previous high was 14), and it matches the high for any NHL team in one game over the last seven seasons. The only other NHL game since 2010–11 in which one team had that many players with points was on Jan. 3, 2015, when Nashville had 16 players get a goal or an assist (or both) in a 7–6 win at Los Angeles.

Tanev’s first two NHL goals come at a good time

• Rookie Brandon Tanev scored the first two goals of his NHL career to turn a 3–2 third-period deficit into a 4–3 lead for the Jets, and Winnipeg added a late empty-net goal for a 5–3 win over the Red Wings in Detroit. Tanev’s first goal evened the score at 3–3 with 7:36 left to play in the third period, and his tiebreaking goal with 1:16 of regulation time left on the clock put the Jets ahead to stay. Tanev is the first player to score the first two goals of his NHL career in the same game while playing for the Jets since the team moved to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011. Three players did that for the Thrashers during their 11 seasons in Atlanta: Patrik Stefan, Dean Sylvester (first 3 goals) and Kamil Piros (first 3 goals).
