On Monday, Phoenix Suns general manager Ryan McDonough once again said he would like to convert Mike James' two-way deal to a standard NBA contract.
"Obviously he got off to a good start and then struggled a little bit two to three weeks ago, but recently he's returned to form and played well and helped us get a couple of wins," McDonough told azcentral sports. "We'd still like to get him on the 15-man roster, and we're looking at different ways to do that."
Since the Suns currently have no plans to send James to their G League team, his max 45-day window to be on an NBA roster will expire Dec. 6. If nothing gets done by that time, James will become a free agent.
To make room for James, McDonough would need to open up a place on the 15-man NBA roster through a trade or waiving a player. Greg Monroe is mentioned most regarding a possible trade, as the newcomer isn't expected to be with the Suns when the season ends. Monroe would like to complete a buyout with the Suns, but McDonough is not looking at that option right now.
If a player is to be waived, the top candidate could be Derrick Jones Jr., who has made only five brief appearances this season. Jones is the only player signed to an NBA contract on the roster without a guaranteed salary for this season.
