WATCH: Logan Tyler UA jersey presentation
Logan Tyler isn’t your typical kicker.
Not only is he the nation’s No. 1-ranked kicking prospect, Tyler also doubles as the star quarterback at Nixa (Missouri) High School and is the best pure athlete to come out of Southwest Missouri since Dorial Green-Beckham emerged in the 2012 recruiting class. Making big plays is nothing new for Tyler, as he’s racked up big numbers throwing and running the ball through four games this season, including a breakout performance against Jefferson City Helias when he had a 62-yard touchdown run, a 14-yard scoring pass and then another 1-yard score on the ground.
That athleticism attracted Florida State to him early in the recruiting process, and Tyler quickly jumped on a scholarship offer from the Seminoles in June. That athleticism has also made him an Under Armour All-American.
Tyler was presented his Under Armour All-America jersey at a ceremony Friday at Nixa in front of friends, family, coaches and his classmates. Not only was it a big honor for Tyler, it was a big deal for Nixa.
Don’t be shocked if many from the town of 19,000 people just South of Springfield, Missouri, make the trip to watch Tyler compete in the nation’s most prestigious high school football all-star game, which will be played Jan. 4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
“It's a huge deal, it sort of puts our town on the map,” Tyler said. “I was really excited about the opportunity to get to play in such a prestigious game like this. I just had to stop and take it all in when I found out about it. It’s still honestly not quite sunk in that I’m an All-American.
“I feel like I’m part of the fraternity of a small group of guys that get invited. To be invited to the Kohl’s Kicking Camp was a huge honor, but to actually be selected for the game is the biggest honor that you can get in high school. You look at the names and the success of the people who have played in previous years and it just gets you excited.”
Four questions with Logan Tyler:
Who is the best player to have played in the Under Armour All-America Game?
“Jameis Winston for sure. He was so much fun to watch in that game and in college at Florida State.”
Which football player did you watch as a kid?
“I really looked up to Dustin Colquitt. He's a left footed punter for the Chiefs which is my favorite NFL team.”
What number do your wear, and why?
“I wear No. 17 because of 1 Peter 2:17, my favorite bible verse. It's how I try and live my life: Honor all people, love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, praise the King.”
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
“Some people might not know I actually want to be an orthopedic surgeon after football, and that that's my second passion, behind sports.”
