Best of the college football recruiting visits: Big 12

As a recruiter, you pull out all the stops to impress a prospect. And Oklahoma did that and then some this weekend when ESPN 300 receiver Tyrie Cleveland took an official visit to Oklahoma. Here’s a look at what his to Norman was like, plus Texas’ big weekend for unofficial visitors and other Big 12 visit news from a social media standpoint:

One of the biggest needs in the 2016 recruiting class for Oklahoma is receiver, and the Sooners have had their sights set on the Houston Westfield ESPN 300 prospect Cleveland for quite some time. The former Texas A&M commit has talked about visiting Norman for quite some time, and finally made the trip to OU this weekend.

The Sooners pulled out all the stops to impress Cleveland on his visit. The OU staff gave him a special birthday surprise, complete with cookie cakes, signing and a special visit to Bob Stoop’s house.

By the time Sunday rolled around, Cleveland was tweeting using the Sooners’ #OUDNA hashtag that all of their commitments use.

Texas played host to more than 30 high-profile 2016 and 2017 prospects Saturday night and from the buzz on social media, many prospects really like what they saw, especially from Longhorns freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard. 2016 running back Christopher Roberts of Lancaster (Texas) posted these pictures before Saturday’s game with Texas blue-chip quarterback commit Shane Buechele and three-star 2017 receiver Omar Manning. Round Rock (Texas) High School 2017 defensive end James Lynch also enjoyed his time on The Forty Acres.

TCU brought in a good group of underclassmen this weekend when it played host to cross-town rival SMU. One of those was 2017 receiver Gavin Holmes of Justin (Texas) Northwest.

Kansas State does a good job bringing in targets early on who could develop into prospects as their senior seasons progress. And that’s why it was worth keeping an eye on 2016 receiver Mitchell Perkinson of Edmond (Oklahoma) North, who was in Manhattan this weekend. He was also joined on the visit by 2017 defensive back prospect Brock Appiah.
