It is possible for the Knicks to gain access to a larger exception to spend on a free agent this summer. But, to do so, they'd have to get Carmelo Anthony's cap hold off the books. So the idea that the free agent the Knicks could acquire with a bigger exception would help entice Carmelo to re-sign is incorrect. The larger exception could, however, help the Knicks in their rebuilding if Carmelo leaves.
