John Mayberry dumped, Danny Muno demoted after trade completed

NEW YORK -- John Mayberry Jr. went from cleanup hitter on Thursday to the unemployment line a day later.

The New York Mets designated Mayberry for assignment and demoted Danny Muno to Triple-A Las Vegas late Friday when they announced the completion of a trade with the Atlanta Braves that brings Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson to Queens.

Mayberry was hitting .164 with three homers and nine RBIs in 110 at-bats this season. He signed for $1.45 million on Dec. 12.

When Mayberry and Eric Campbell started in the Nos. 4 and 5 positions in the batting order against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Thursday's series opener, the Mets became only the second team since 1920 to start players batting less than .180 in those slots (minimum 100 at-bats apiece).

Muno is hitting .148 (4-for-27) at the major league level this season.
