Mets' Juan Uribe dislikes first base, so he gets start at second base

NEW YORK -- Juan Uribe worked out at first base last week in Philadelphia, but using him at that position apparently is off the table for the New York Mets.

“He doesn’t like to play first,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

So with David Wright back from the DL and Collins wanting to get Uribe into the lineup against left-hander Wade Miley, Uribe will start at second base against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Had Uribe shown an aptitude for first base, optimally he would have started there and Daniel Murphy would have manned second base. Instead, the roles are reversed.

Uribe has started at second base once this season -- June 6 for the Atlanta Braves. Overall, he has appeared in 221 major league games at second base (193 starts), although none since 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I’ve never seen him at second,” Collins said. “The expectations are that he’s going to get three hits and catch every ground ball that’s hit to him.”
