Mets' trade for Addison Reed now official

NEW YORK -- It’s official.

The New York Mets have confirmed the acquisition of right-handed reliever Addison Reed from the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league right-handers Matt Koch and Miller Diaz.

Reed is due to be activated by the Mets on Monday, the day before rosters expand, so the Amazin’s will need to shed a player from the 25-man roster.

In order to clear the 40-man roster spot for Reed, the Mets technically promoted infielder Wilfredo Tovar from Triple-A Las Vegas and placed him on the 60-day DL. That’s the same maneuver the team recently did with Jack Leathersich to free a 40-man roster spot for David Wright’s return from the 60-day DL. Tovar will earn major league service time and pay ($99,836.07) for the remainder of the season.

Reed, who had 40 saves in 2013 with the Chicago White Sox and 32 last season with the D-backs, is likely to pitch in the seventh inning for the Mets, leading into setup man Tyler Clippard.

“He got some funk to him,” said Michael Cuddyer, who has three plate appearances against Reed over the past two seasons. “He’s long. He’s got a little bit of a cut. And he’s a former closer, so he’s obviously been in big situations.”

Said Mets manager Terry Collins: “You add good people and you add experience, it helps. It’s going to help. Knowing there’s help on the way -- or some guy that can come in and play a big role, because that’s been a big inning for us -- I think it would be a big lift for us.”
